There are now three types of products available for converting an existing wood burning fireplace to gas, each with it's own advantages.

1. Vented Gas Logs

Of the three types of gas products you can add to your fireplace, vented gas logs have been around the longest. We recommend these when a customer is looking for a realistic looking, affordable product (heat is not the primary objective). Typically they include the burner unit, special grate, "glowing embers" and/or lava rock, and of course, the logs themselves, which are available in a variety of wood styles, sizes, and in natural or LP (propane), gas. They are operated with the damper open (that's the "vented" part), so that often folks will add glass doors to help prevent heat loss (when the logs are not on), and are about the most realistic of the gas alternatives.

2. Vent Free Gas Logs

The second type of gas conversion option are vent free gas logs. (Also called Unvented, Ventless, etc.). This is one of the products we recommend when the customer's primary objective is heat. By burning at an amazing 99.9% efficiency, these remarkable gas logs are perfect for people looking for affordable heat (high heat bills, drafty older homes, cathedral ceiling rooms, etc.). Though they are not as realistic as their vented competitors (and they can't be installed in bedroom fireplaces), their efficiency has made them a solid place in the fireplace industry.
